Mission & Charter

Mission

Provide a thoughtful and consistent framework for the management of institutional data that will enable responsible use of data, improve data quality, document data lineage,  protect data assets, and promote data literacy.

Charter

The Data Governance Executive Council is responsible for ensuring good stewardship of Yale’s institutional data. The DGEC coordinates the efforts required to deliver high-quality data that is provided and used in a consistent, meaningful and secure manner.

The DGEC will focus on institutional data only. Data generated in research is a separate province, with its own requirements and coordination structure through the Vice Provost for Research.  The DGEC currently meets twice a month, and meetings include relevant data stewards based on requested data.

The DGEC will pursue the following goals:

  • Identify and document institutional data stewards, resources, and systems
  • Confirm and document definitions for data fields and calculated fields that have institutional meaning
  • Ensure definitions that cross data domains share common standards that enable linking between data domains
  • Manage access, defining data classifications and role-based access standards, as well as managing exceptions to those rules
  • Create a focal point for awareness of these definitions and standards

Background on Data Governance at Yale

In 2018, the introduction of the Common Reporting Platform (CoRE) provided the chance for intentional and coordinated data decision-making at Yale. Strong data governance became essential to realizing the intended benefits of CoRE. In AY19 CoRE addressed three domains that provided the initial focus for the data governance work at Yale:

  • Research (Pre-Award)
  • Space Planning Data
  • Finance Data Model

In 2020, the DG working group was put on hiatus and was restarted again in 2022 under the leadership of Frank Mathew & Kathleen Broderick, who reconvened the DG Executive Council and began meeting regularly to define the mission, objectives, and begin a use-case driven approach to data governance. In September 2022, Kathleen Galo joined the group as Data Governance Lead.
